Hi, my name is Jess Guttenberg and I've transitioned to a career in web development from fifteen years in higher education and swim coaching. I've chosen this career because I enjoy the challenge of code: the never ending list of new languages to learn, consistent updates, and new methods of problem solving and thinking.
In my previous careers, I studied motivation, growth mindset, and interpersonal communication as a means of problem solving. I look forward to applying my strategic thinking to a new team in the tech industry where i can continue to learn and grow.
After bootcamp, I taped a podcast episode with Chelsea Kaufman, CEO of Learn Academy, about my adventure of learning to code. In the episode, I discuss my background, why I chose this new career, and I pass along my advice to others about to make the transition. Click here to listen!
Outside of code, I'm typically found outside where I'm cycling, hiking, camping, or exploring beautiful San Diego:)

I began creating this blog March 2, 2019 at a Django Girls Workshop. When I first began, my intention was to showcase code from bootcamp or outside projects. However, this transformed into a platform where I reflect on the process of learning to code. The actual creation of the blog is how I showcase my programming skills. More than anything, I believe this project demonstrates my ability to problem solve in a framework I'm unfamiliar with. I have minimal knowledge of Python as a language, but have still made this work through my understanding of MVC and other languages. The code to the blog can be found here.
Close ProjectAfter months of struggling to learn Big O Notation, I gave a Tech Talk to introduce the concept to my bootcamp cohort. The powerpoint can be found here and a video of the full presentation can be found here.
Close ProjectThis was my Capstone Project at Learn Academy. My team, The Bundle Execs, created MobFit, a decoupled web application using Rails and React with a Postgres database. New tools used: external API, Geocoder gem, Jbuilder, Trello, and two forms of authentication through Devise. We worked as individuals, pairs, and as a mob to complete. The deployed app was hosted on Heroku (when things were free). The group repo can be found here.
